Rachel Stewart - About Me

Being the child of a very talented artist and musician, I began at an early age to express myself creatively through drawing, singing and painting.  With no formal training, I used many different outlets such as murals, graffitti and even the occasional tagging.

In my early twenties I began to sell my art and fell in love with acrylics and canvas as my mediums, I dabbled in singing with bands, and even sewing, but always came back to the canvas, my art has become a journey of self expression by which I choose to explore my past.

I prefer blance and symmetry in my work and prefer a slightly unfinished look, my main subversion is to take a component literally and figuratively turn it upside down or apply it in ways it was not intended, the inspiration for my art comes from literally everywhere but there are influences from my background in graffitti and my love of HIP-HOP and history.

I constantly find myself experimenting, i find it important to develop and express new techniques that enhance and further the themes of color and movement that I embrace.  Each piece in this portfolio begins with a very simple idea: a line a shape, a color or palette, a pattern or image.  Sometimes the end result is merely a statement of technical capability, and it tells the viewer only what I learned to do, but when the end result posesses true color and movement it becomes part of my portfolio.
